System CEO Carlos Migoya said the layoffs are necessary to adjust staffing due to reduced patient volume, according to the report. Approximately 920 people will be laid off and 195 vacant positions will be eliminated. Though Mr. Migoya said he doesn’t believe in job-cutting as a long-term solution, he said the system cannot afford to have extra staff, according to the report.
While announcing the cuts, Mr. Migoya also said the system will add up to 350 part-time employees to provide flexible staffing, according to the report. With both reductions and part-time additions taken into account, Jackson will still have 10 percent fewer employees than it did last summer.
