A collaborative study by The Joint Commission and HFHS revealed that 45 percent of U.S. hospitals had a smoking ban for their entire property in 2008 and 15 percent were planning to adopt a similar policy. However, few resources existed to help healthcare organizations maintain and enforce the policy.
The new how-to guide, “Keeping Your Hospital Property Smoke-Free,” is designed to help hospitals maintain a smoke- or tobacco-free policy once enacted. The tool provides strategies based on research and case studies on gaining leadership and employee support, communicating effectively and avoiding common mistakes, among other topics.
