The law was signed by Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds in May, with Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union filing suits against the state soon after. These groups argued that most women don’t even know they are pregnant before a fetal heartbeat can be detected.
Lawyers for the state agreed to a temporary injunction in enforcing the law until the matter is resolved before a judge. Iowa is represented by the Thomas More Society, a conservative law firm that stepped in because state Attorney General Tom Miller said his personal beliefs prevent him from representing the matter in court.
