Illinois’ Vista Health Systems Breaks Ground on Standalone ED After Failing to Obtain Approval for Hospital

Vista Health System, based in Waukegan, Ill., broke ground on a $3.9 million freestanding emergency department in Lindenhurst, Ill., which will provide 24-hour emergency services to area residents, according to a news release by the health system.

The health system moved forward with construction of the Lindenhurst Freestanding Emergency Center after several years of failed attempts to develop a full-service, acute-care hospital in the area, calling it the “next best option,” according to a report by the Daily Herald. The state of Illinois has not approved a certificate of need for a new hospital in nine years.

Illinois began allowing free-standing EDs in February, and Vista applied for approval in May. A representative of the health system said it will continue to pursue approval for a full hospital.
