The report found the hospitals provided $14.8 billion in wages and benefits in 2008, spending from which generated $20.7 billion in economic impact. Hospitals spent $13.3 billion on goods and services, generating an additional $18.7 billion in economic activity and $3.2 billion on buildings and equipment, generating an additional $4.4 billion.
For the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2009, hospitals in the state spent nearly $500 million on charity care, with overall community benefit reaching nearly $4.7 billion.
In 2008, hospitals in Illinois cared for 5.1 million patients in their emergency departments, admitted more than 1.6 million inpatients and experienced 30.7 million outpatient visits.
