In a 6-3 vote, the board denied Mercy a certificate of need to build a $115 million, 70-bed facility. This was a scaled-down version of its initial plan to build a 128-bed facility, which the board denied with a 6-2 vote in December.
Mercy Vice President Rich Gruber said the health system will review its options.
In July, the Illinois board approved a CON for Centegra Health System in Crystal Lake, Ill., to build a new 128-bed hospital in Huntley, which is about 19 miles from Crystal Lake. The board had denied Centegra a CON in an earlier December vote, but it reversed its decision due to a clerical error in the filing of an impact study in the CON application.
