In the spring of 2007, Iasis opened a new hospital, Mountain Vista Medical Center, as a replacement for Mesa General Hospital, which it planned to close. At that time, Robert Siegel, MD, entered into discussions with Mesa General’s landlord to purchase or lease the Mesa General facility and open Apache Junction Hospital at the site.
Dr. Siegel had previously entered into a number of agreements with Mesa General and St. Luke’s through his company Advanced Cardiac Specialists to lease cardiac catheterization laboratory space. ACS also had an agreement with the system to operate an outpatient treatment center on the Mesa General Hospital campus. However, Mesa General, St. Luke’s, and Iasis allegedly breached their contract terms with ACS and terminated the contract early.
Dr. Siegel also alleged that after Mesa General closed, the hospital threw out hospital beds and other fixtures rather than selling them.
The judgment also requires Iasis and its subsidiaries to pay interest of 10 percent from May 10, 2010, until its debt is paid to Advanced Cardiac Specialists, Dr. Siegel, his wife Barbara Barker-Siegel, MD, and Apache Junction Hospital.
