The legislation proposes a five-year extension for CHIP funding, which expired Sept. 30, while also addressing the Medicaid cliff that Puerto Rico faces after $6.5 billion in one-time Medicaid funding ran out at the end of the fiscal year. This is the first Republican effort to issue funds to Puerto Rico since Hurricane Maria — the Trump administration has not yet proposed a direct aid package to Puerto Rico to deal with the storm’s damage.
The bill also includes provisions that would repeal the ACA’s public health prevention fund and raise Medicare rates for wealthier seniors.
It had not received any Democratic support ahead of its markup on Wednesday.
