Hospitals in Recovery Audit Contractor Region B, which roughly corresponds with the Midwest, were more successful in appealing RAC decisions than hospitals in the three other RAC regions, according to a report by the Ohio Hospital Association.

In the third quarter of 2010, 73 percent of hospital appeals of payment denials were successful against CGI Federal, the Region B contractor, nearly double the national rate of 38 percent, according to the AHA’s RACTrac survey.

“This could be an indication that RACs are too aggressive in this region,” the Ohio Hospital Association stated.
