Hospital Prices Drop in July, First Decline in Nearly Five Years

The price to consumers for hospital services dropped 0.5 percent in July, the first decline since Aug. 2005, according to a report by the Healthcare Financial Management Association.

Comparatively, consumer prices for hospital services increased 0.6 percent in June and 0.7 percent a year ago.

The one-month drop from June to July is the largest since 1997, when the Bureau of Labor Statistics began publishing data on consumer prices for hospitals, according to the report.

The price to consumers for physician services, however, rose 0.4 percent in July, down from 0.5 percent in June, but up from 0.2 percent a year prior.
