Hospital C-suite should be aware of these 3 trends in 2019, CEO says

The healthcare industry saw several major shifts last year, including new deals, offerings and unique combinations between industry players. One healthcare executive claims those shifts will set the table for 2019, leading the way for even more radical shifts throughout the industry.

Susan DeVore, president and CEO of Premier, a healthcare improvement company in Charlotte, N.C., wrote about several trends the healthcare industry will experience during the next year in a Jan. 10 op-ed for Health Affairs.

Three trends the healthcare C-suite will see in 2019:

1. Value-based care push will continue. Ms. DeVore states that healthcare organizations will find it necessary to enter into value-based care if they have not already done so, as other options will continue to narrow.

2. Physicians more likely to participate in VBC. Programs like the bundled payments for care improvement advanced program will feature more physician participation in the years to come, leading more hospitals and health systems to compete to buy physician networks. The consolidation will also lead to the growth and expansion of clinically integrated networks.

3. Disruption abounds. More than half of consumers have expressed willingness to receive care from nontraditional settings if that meant the care was cheaper and more accessible, according to a report from PricewaterhouseCoopers. Hospital and health systems must change the way they provide care to keep up with the times and leverage those changes to become disruptors themselves, Ms. DeVore notes.
