HealthTrust addresses pharmacy leadership shortage

While finding pharmacists is not a difficult task, creating pharmacy leaders is.

HealthTrust created the nation’s first corporate-based training program for pharmacy leaders in 2014 in hopes of addressing the importance of non-clinical functions when running a pharmacy.

According to a recent post on its reSOURCEs website, HealthTrust director of Clinical Pharmacy Services Marcus Dortch, PharmD provides background on this training program and how it is creating better leaders for the pharmacy profession.

Budget planning, financial reporting, negotiating contracts and other non-clinical tasks are not covered in the pharmacy curriculum, according to the post. The only way pharmacists see these is on the job. HealthTrust wanted to combat that and established its Corporate Pharmacy Leadership Program in 2014. HealthTrust places pharmacists in residence for one year at HealthTrust headquarters in Brentwood, Tenn.

During the residency, students are able to interact with other hospital leaders while gaining experience working with pharmacy suppliers.

Now, instead of the most senior clinician filling a leadership position, a well-trained pharmacy leader can also have the opportunity to take the spot at the head of the table.
