Nurses at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte, Fla., approved unionization Wednesday night. They follow nurses at three other HCA facilities in Florida — Community Hospital in New Port Richey, Fla., Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford, Fla., and Osceola Regional Medical Center in Kissimmee, Fla. — that approved union representation with NNU in the past month.
The decision to unionize could drive up nurse wages, and therefore total healthcare costs, in the area, since non-unionized hospitals will likely increase wages to compete with union pay, according to those critical of the votes.
