Mr. Isakson will retire at the end of the year due to Parkinson’s disease. The state is locked in a disagreement over who should fill his seat for the rest of the term. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp recommended Kelly Loeffler, CEO of financial services firm Bakkt and co-owner of the local WNBA team, and President Donald Trump recommend U.S. Rep. Doug Collins, R-Gainesville, according to AJC.
Ms. Loeffler serves on the board of Grady Memorial, inviting scrutiny of her role amid the disagreement over Mr. Isakson’s replacement. In particular, the discussion has attracted the attention of anti-abortion activists, who say Grady Memorial is a “training ground for abortionists” due to its ties to Emory University’s School of Medicine, according to AJC.
