Fred Rothstein, MD, who served as president of University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center from 2003 to 2015, died Aug. 6 at age 74.
Dr. Rothstein retired in 2015 after nearly 40 years with Cleveland-based University Hospitals, according to an Aug. 7 message to caregivers from UH CEO Cliff Megerian, MD, shared with Becker’s.
During his tenure, he helped lead a transformation of the main campus, adding multiple facilities, including UH Seidman Cancer Center and the Center for Emergency Medicine.
“Dr. Rothstein was a deeply respected physician, educator, and executive whose steady leadership helped guide UH through a period of unprecedented change and growth,” Dr. Megerian said. “… [He] played a vital role in strengthening our position as a nationally recognized academic medical center and was instrumental in attracting top talent across clinical, scientific, and educational domains.”
Following retirement, Dr. Rothstein volunteered in several leadership capacities and inspired the creation of two endowed positions, reflecting his commitment to enhancing the patient experience.
He briefly returned to serve as interim chair of pediatrics at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, according to his obituary. The Fred C. Rothstein, MD, Chief Experience Officer role was created in his name.
