Dr. Staley joined the system in 1974, according to an obituary published Oct. 8 in the Iowa City Press-Citizen. He served as COO from 1993 to 2003 and again from 2009 to 2013.
Dr. Staley also was interim CEO of the Iowa City, Iowa-based system from 1993 to 1994.
While at the system, he helped to establish its cardiovascular research center, which is now 50 years old, according to the obituary.
Dr. Staley also was a professor at the UI College of Public Health from 1977 until he retired in 2019.
