Dr. Griner died on June 24 in Weston, Mass., at age 91, according to URMC.
His career spanned more than six decades.
Dr. Griner spent most of his career at the University of Rochester, where he was appointed the Samuel E. Durand Professor of Medicine, according to his obituary. He took the helm of Strong Memorial Hospital in 1984 and served as the hospital’s CEO for 11 years.
During his tenure as CEO, SMH opened a 24-bed ambulatory surgery unit and earned designation as a state bone marrow transplant center, among other accomplishments, according to URMC. Dr. Griner also was chair of the Department of Health Services and director of clinical services at URMC.
Leo Brideau, senior advisor to URMC Leadership, who was COO during Dr. Griner’s tenure as CEO, said in URMC’s post, “Paul was a superb physician and teacher who cared deeply for every patient he served. He imbued his senior leadership team with the same profound respect for all the patients we served. Whenever we were faced with a difficult management decision, his first question to us was always: ‘What’s best for our patients?'”
Other accomplishments and roles throughout his life include his involvement in treatment breakthroughs in medicine; consulting with the Clinton administration on health insurance legislation; serving as a consultant to the Institute for Healthcare Improvement; serving as president of three national medical organizations; and being elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.
