Former Mercy Iowa City CEO Ronald Reed dies at 64

Ronald Reed, former longtime CEO of Mercy Iowa City, died Feb. 6 at age 64 after a long battle with a chronic illness, according to The Gazette.

Mr. Reed served as CEO of Mercy Iowa City from 1995 until his retirement in 2016. During his tenure, he oversaw the expansion of the hospital's services, including new primary care clinics, a wound and vein center and a hospice care unit.

In addition, Mr. Reed led Mercy Iowa City through a period of low inpatient admissions while Iowa City-based University of Iowa brought more services into the area. Despite the competition, Mr. Reed helped the hospital maintain a strong profit margin by developing niche markets.

"Our hope is we can continue to provide choice in the community," Reed told The Gazette in 2015.
