Jimmie Lloyd Mayo, former president of Baptist Medical Center Nassau in Fernandina Beach, Fla., died Aug. 18 at age 79, according to his obituary.
Mr. Mayo became the hospital’s first president in 1994 and retired in 2010, capping 29 years in hospital administration. He began that career in 1981 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Gadsden, Ala., and later earned a master’s degree in hospital administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Before entering hospital administration, Mr. Mayo served as a chaplain and as minister of Brookside Church of Christ in Tulsa, Okla., according to the obituary. He was a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
“Jim Mayo’s impact on Baptist Health, Baptist Medical Center Nassau and the Nassau County community is immeasurable,” Matthew Zuino, president and CEO of Baptist Health, said in a statement shared with Becker’s. “As Nassau’s first administrator and hospital president, he guided the hospital through a period of remarkable growth and transformation, helping establish it as the nationally recognized, state-of-the-art community hospital it is today. His background as a minister shaped a leadership style rooted in service, humility and a deep concern for the well-being of patients and families. We are grateful for his lasting contributions to Baptist Health and Nassau County.”
Baptist Medical Center Nassau is one of six hospitals in Jacksonville, Fla.-based Baptist Health, a nonprofit system founded in 1955 with 10 emergency centers and more than 200 outpatient care sites.
