St. Louis-based Ascension appointed Elizabeth Fowler, PhD, JD, to its board of directors, effective June 3.

Dr. Fowler most recently served as deputy administrator and director of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation at CMS, where she led value-based care initiatives across Medicare and Medicaid and oversaw a budget of approximately $1 billion and a staff of more than 500, according to a June 16 news release. She is currently a Distinguished Scholar at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Johns Hopkins Carey Business School.

“She brings valuable experience and a strong understanding of the issues facing patients, providers, and communities,” Ascension President and CEO Eduardo Conrado said in the release.

Before her tenure at CMS, Dr. Fowler served as executive vice president of programs at The Commonwealth Fund and vice president of global health policy at Johnson & Johnson. She also held senior policy roles in the White House and U.S. Senate, where she contributed to the development of the ACA and the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act.

Ascension operates 90 wholly owned or consolidated hospitals, holds ownership interests in 29 additional hospitals through partnerships across 16 states, and also runs 22 senior living facilities and various other care sites.

At Becker's 4th Annual CEO + CFO Roundtable, taking place November 2–5 in Chicago, more than 1,500 hospital and health system executives tackle decisions that determine whether organizations thrive or merely survive: protecting margins under cost pressure, choosing where to grow, renegotiating payer relationships, stabilizing the workforce and proving real ROI on technology. This is where leaders work through them together, face-to-face. Apply for complimentary registration now.
