The former CEO and COO of Tri-Lakes Medical Center in Batesville, Miss., has been accused of involvement in kickbacks and bribery conspiracy, among other federal charges, according to a Clarion-Ledger report.
Raymond L. Shoemaker of Tupleo, Miss., has been charged with conspiracy to commit and committing healthcare fraud, making false claims to the FBI in connection with a federal investigation, making false statements to the U.S. Department of Agriculture in connection with a loan, embezzlement from the medical center and receiving kickbacks for nursing services.
Earnest L. Garner of Batesville has also been named in the 10-count federal indictment. Mr. Garner operated nursing staffing companies and allegedly paid Mr. Shoemaker kickbacks in 2005, funneled through David Chandler, who was president of the medical center’s board.
If convicted of all counts, Mr. Shoemaker faces up to 80 years in prison and $2.5 million in fines. Mr. Garner faces up to 25 years in prison and $1 million in fines.
