Former Baptist Health CEO passes away

Tommy J. Smith, former president and CEO at Louisville, Ky.-based Baptist Health, died May 17.

Mr. Smith worked at Baptist Health for 37 years, serving at the helm of the health system for 18 of those years. During his tenure, Baptist Health grew from a $400 million system to one with $1.6 billion-plus in net revenue.

Mr. Smith also spearheaded partnerships with several hospitals, including Pattie A. Clay Regional Medical Center in Richmond, Ky., and Trover Health System in Madisonville, Ky. Both hospitals became a part of the health system in 2012.

Prior to serving as health system CEO, Mr. Smith led three of its five hospitals.

"We are saddened by the death of a man whose quiet determination and consistent vision led the way for Baptist Health to expand its mission and provide quality care close to home for thousands of Kentuckians," said Allen Rudd, chairman of the Baptist Health's board of directors.
