Scholarships from the donor-supported fund will be awarded to medical students who “embody Dr. Van Durme’s commitment to providing respectful, patient-centered care that is responsive to community needs, with a special focus on underserved communities, including minorities, the elderly and rural residents,” the scholarship webpage states.
“His influence in the community is expansive, exemplified in many ways by the grassroots effort he undertook to engage medically underserved residents and neighborhoods in the development of the new primary care center,” Alma Littles, MD, the interim dean of the Florida State University College of Medicine said in a statement shared with Becker’s. “He mentored thousands of family physicians during his careers with the University of South Florida and FSU colleges of medicine. Dr. Van Durme’s leadership, friendship and larger-than-life personality leave an indelible void.”
Dr. Van Durme’s funeral is set for June 10, according to WCTV.
