Patients at The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills were left without air conditioning for three days in the wake of Hurricane Irma, and residents were found with body temperatures as high as 106 degrees, according to ABC News.
Memorial Regional staff members called in back-up once they evaluated the situation. Emergency responders began checking every room, triaging patients as necessary. Three dead residents were found within the first 10 minutes, and after another 10 minutes two more dead residents were discovered.
A total of eight patients between the ages of 70 and 99 were eventually found dead and 145 residents were evacuated from the nursing home. Though the facility filed updates with the state in the days after the storm, they never acknowledged that patients faced any health risks.
