Here are five things to know about the effort.
1. Senate Democrats are especially targeting Republican governors in Medicaid expansion states.
2. Sen. Thomas Carper, D-Del., is heading the effort. The senator told The Washington Post he called “a couple dozen” Republican and Democratic senators and governors over the July 4 recess to say “this is a good time for us to hit the pause button in the Senate, and step back and have some good heart-to-heart conversations” regarding changes to the ACA.
3. Mr. Carper noted to the publication the upcoming National Governors Association meeting, scheduled to begin Friday in Providence, R.I., also provides an opportunity for governors to give their input on healthcare. Vice President Mike Pence is scheduled to give the opening keynote at the meeting.
4. The effort comes as the initial Senate GOP healthcare bill faces opposition from a number of Republican members. Senate GOP leaders could unveil a new draft of the legislation as early as this week, with a potential vote next week.
5. In the meantime, Vice President Pence and White House Legislative Affairs Director Marc Short advocated for repealing the ACA if lawmakers remain divided on how to replace it, according to the report.
