Democrats protest AHCA on Senate floor

In an effort to slow the passage of the GOP's healthcare bill, Senate democrats will take the floor in protest Monday until at least midnight, according to Politico.

Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., and Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, organized the protests, which are in response to the secretive way in which Republicans have drafted their version of the AHCA. Due to a budget reconciliation rule, Republicans require only a simple majority of 51 votes to pass the bill.

Though any liberal senators are imploring Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-NY, to shut the Senate down, that action could work to unify a fractured Republican caucus. Democrats are also wary of drastic measures that could shift public perception from Republican secrecy to Democratic obstruction.
