Democrats introduce legislation to offer state-sponsored public option

Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, and Rep. Ben Ray Lujan, D-N.M., proposed legislation that would allow states to establish Medicaid buy-in options, according to The Hill.

The bill would expand Medicaid eligibility to any resident who wants to purchase the coverage. It has 17 co-sponsors in the Senate, including Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., who proposed a Medicare-for-all bill in September.

Though the buy-in bill has little chance of passing through a Republican-controlled Congress, Mr. Schatz argues the bill demonstrates Democratic healthcare values.

“I think it’s a golden age in terms of policy ideas when it comes to Democrats and healthcare,” Mr. Schatz said, according to The Hill. “We want to make sure that people understand that we have a vision for the future.”
