Democrats blast Justice Department for not defending ACA

U.S. House Democrats have criticized the Justice Department for refusing to defend the ACA in a lawsuit brought by 20 Republican-led states that argue key aspects of the act are unconstitutional, according to The Hill.

Democrat Reps. Bobby Scott, Va.; Frank Pallone, N.J., and Richard Neal, Mass., united to denounce the Justice Department.

"The Justice Department's refusal to defend the Affordable Care Act in federal court is a stunning attack on the rule of law, the stability of our health care system and Americans’ access to affordable health care," the lawmakers said.

The congressmen said that the Justice Department’s refusal to defend the ACA is an example of Republican sabotage of the legislation.

“The administration’s attempt to eliminate protections for the 130 million Americans with pre-existing conditions is just the latest — and potentially the most damaging — example of the coordinated effort by congressional Republicans and the Trump administration to sabotage the Affordable Care Act, driving up uninsured rates and out-of-pocket costs for Americans," the Democrats said, according to The Hill.
