D.C.’s Washington Hospital Center Lays Off 200, Citing Hospital Tax

Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., has laid off 200 workers or about 3 percent of its workers, citing a tax on hospital beds as well as reduced disproportionate share Medicaid funding, according to a Washington Business Journal report.

The hospital also plans to close one of its medical floors, eliminating a nursing unit. by July 1.

John Sullivan, president of the hospital, said the cuts were necessary to stem losses. He also cited a Washington, D.C. bed tax of $500 per licensed bed and reduced disproportionate share funds as additional financial burdens, according to the report.
