Two years after developing a model call the Step Ahead Plan to bundle payments for total hip and knee replacements, Steven Schutzer, MD, co-director of CJRI finally found an insurance company to buy into the model.
The Step Ahead Plan, which is a collaborative effort with St. Francis Hospital and Woodland Anesthesiology Associates, was recently accepted by Farmington-based ConnectiCare to reimburse one value-based price.
For now, any cost overruns get reimbursed based on a fee schedule. Dr. Schutzer called the plan “baby steps” establishing a continuum of care. So far, 20 surgeries have been performed since the contract went to ConnectiCare, and there have been no cost overruns.
