The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act called for the redistribution of the slots at closed hospitals in order to preserve the number of Graduate Medical Education and Indirect Medical Education slots CMS funds. The first round of redistribution affected 695 direct GME and 662 IME slots at 14 hospitals that closed between March 2008 and August 2010.
