Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center in New York Lays Off 8 Employees

Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg, N.Y., has laid off eight full-time employees, according to a Watertown Daily Times report.

The 130-bed community hospital's revenues grew less than 1 percent within the first half of 2012, but expenses increased by 4 percent in that same period, according to the report. CHMC is also seeking other ways to cut costs aside from layoffs, including contract renegotiations, supply efficiency and improved collections.

The hospital currently has about 675 full- and part-time employees, factoring in the recent layoffs. Some laid-off employees worked in the hospital's prenatal care clinic, which closed last year but was slated to reopen. It will remain closed due to the CHMC's financial circumstances.
