Currently, only two facilities are open for patient enrollment in the clinical trial: Shephard Center in Atlanta, Ga., and Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Patients interested in participating in the trial will undergo tremendously strict selection processes, and in the end, only eight will participate.
The trial is sponsored by Geron Corp., a biopharmaceutical company, which has the first U.S. FDA license to use embryonic stem cells to treat people. More specifically, Geron is using the stem cells on patients with new spinal cord injuries.
