Mr. Underwood was 78.
During his nearly four decades on the board, TMC expanded from 24 to 56 member institutions. Mr. Underwood served as chairman for 23 years.
In addition to his time on the TMC board, Mr. Underwood was the longest-serving member of the Houston Methodist board of directors. He and his wife Lynda pledged $20 million to the Houston Methodist Hospital in 2013.
“Mr. Underwood was an extraordinary man of principle and an exemplary servant to the Texas Medical Center and the greater Houston region,” said Robert C. Robbins, MD, president and CEO of the Texas Medical Center.
