As president and CEO, Mr. Romoff leads more than 55,000 employees, 20 hospitals, 400 physicians‘ offices and outpatient sites, a health insurance services division and international and commercial services. Under his leadership, UPMC has evolved from an academic medical center into a fully integrated $10 billion global health enterprise.
Mr. Romoff began his career at the University of Pittsburgh as the director of the office of education and regional programming for Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic. In 1975, he became WPIC‘s administrator and associate director. While he was in a leadership position at WPIC, it became the nation‘s leading psychiatric research center, receiving more funding from the National Institute of Mental Health than any other institution. From 1986 to 1992, Mr. Romoff was the executive vice president of UPMC and vice president for health sciences of the University of Pittsburgh. In 1991, he assumed the role of interim senior vice president of business and finance for the University. In 1992, he was named president of UPMC, and in 2006, he became the president and CEO.
