NQF has endorsed 30 evidence-based practices that improve patient safety. For their study, the researchers reviewed data from surveys of 140 Magnet hospitals and 1,320 non-Magnet hospitals in 34 regions over three years to ascertain whether Magnet hospitals reported higher rates of adopting and implementing NQF Safe Practices and the characteristics that lead to higher adoption and implementation rates.
The study’s investigators determined that certain characteristics that are more prevalent among Magnet hospitals, such as higher percentages of registered nurses and higher nurse-hours per patient, were associated with higher adoption of NQF Safe Practices.
The study’s authors also noted that several non-Magnet hospitals were also successful in adopting and implementing many or all of the NQF Safe Practices, so the Magnet hospital credential is not a prerequisite for success in adopting these practices.
