Cadre of Mich. healthcare leaders voice support for $2.9B boost for bus system

Four hospital executives and a pediatrician are speaking out in support of a proposal on the Nov. 8 ballot that would raise taxes in Michigan by $2.9 billion over 20 years to boost funding for the Regional Transit Authority bus system and commuter rail line, according to Crain’s Detroit Business.

The hospital executives and the physician on Monday presented internal studies that show how lack of transportation often leads to missed medical appointments, which impedes care.

The executives include Jean Meyer, RN, president and CEO of Warren, Mich.-based St. John Providence Health System; Conrad Mallett, chief administrative officer at Detroit Medical Center; Bob Riney, executive vice president and COO of Detroit-based Henry Ford Health System and chairman of the Michigan Health & Hospital Association board; and Paul Conway, chief human resources officer at Royal Oak, Mich.-based Beaumont Health.

The pediatrician is Elliott Attisha, DO. Dr. Attisha is employed by Henry Ford Health System and he is the husband of Mona Hanna-Attisha, MD, who gained recognition last year for being one of the first to identify problems with lead in the water of Flint, Mich.
