The grant, from the New York Department of Health, will fund the hospital’s revitalization plan, which includes a new emergency department, enhanced surgical unit and senior care facility.
The hospital has been struggling financially for more than 25 years, according to a Mount Vernon news release. The revitalization will involve more than $30 million in construction, and more than $23 million in state funding from the Department of Health’s HEAL NY program, which assists hospitals in urban areas that are transitioning into new modes of healthcare delivery. Mount Vernon’s budget also includes $5.9 million to pay off bank debt, according to the release.
Mount Vernon is the city’s largest employer, according to the Wall Street Journal report.
