Building a healthcare marketplace collaborative: 4 teams in Intel's model

To help lower employee healthcare costs, Intel created a Healthcare Marketplace Collaborative with four teams, focused on adopting best-practice clinical processes for treating conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure and lower back pain.

The collaborative decreased Intel's costs of certain conditions fell between 24 percent and 49 percent, improved patient access to care, returned employees to work faster, boosted patient satisfaction and eliminated more than 10,000 hours' worth of waste in healthcare suppliers' business processes.

To generate these results, Intel created the HMC to include four teams, which are summarized below from a recent article published in Harvard Business Review.

1. Core operating team

  • Team members: Program managers, lean experts, clinicians and a physician leader
  • Meeting frequency: Weekly
  • Responsibilities: Overseeing the design and implementation of value streams, managing integration among the teams, identifying issues and variations in practices and data collection and determining possible solutions

2. Medical team

  • Team members: Medical directors, physician leaders and program managers
  • Meeting frequency: Monthly
  • Responsibilities: Reviewing and modifying the clinical value streams, evaluating results of various approaches, approving final value streams, cultivating buy-in among clinician and fostering a patient-centric, data-driven culture

3. Steering committee

  • Team members: Executive sponsors, medical directors and a physician leader
  • Meeting frequency: Quarterly
  • Responsibilities: Setting the initiatives strategic direction, determining how many and what type of conditions should be addressed and monitoring progress

4. All-hands team

  • Team members: All key players as well as additional stakeholders (i.e. clinicians, IT staff)
  • Meeting frequency: Annually
  • Responsibilities: Conducting annual planning and aligning strategic direction
