Question: What are your top priorities for 2022?

Chris Carmody: Our patients, members and employees. We will continue to leverage technologies to enable frictionless access to care, modernize and expand our clinical analytics platform to garner new insights to support and augment the delivery of care, and continue to recruit, develop and retain our high performing and diverse workforce.

Q: What technologies and innovations are you most excited about in healthcare right now?

CC: I’m most excited for the possibilities analytics bring to the care delivery spectrum leveraging technologies like machine learning and artificial intelligence. We are modernizing and expanding our clinical analytics platform to meet current and future analytical needs to support patient care and operational activities.

Q: What will the lasting legacy of COVID-19 be on the healthcare system?

CC: At UPMC there was a full transformation into becoming a true learning health system. The urgency created by the need to help patients facing Covid resulted in near real-time changes in how patients were cared for. This was enabled by the use of advanced analytics in conjunction with the latest scientific findings and regulatory approvals.

Covid also brought to the forefront the amazing people who directly and indirectly provide care to those at their most vulnerable state. It’s an honor and privilege to be an IT professional supporting those front line doctors, nurses, and support teams taking care of our own family members, friends, neighbors and communities that we serve.

Q: What advice do you have for emerging healthcare leaders today?

CC: As a healthcare IT leader there is no greater focus than engaging and listening to your teams and customers. Being intentional and active in your listening is a skill that will serve you well as you grow into a leadership position. Listening provides for learning, engagement, inclusiveness and ultimately a positive path forward no matter the challenges or obstacles you may face.
