This new division was founded in response to requests by clients of ASC Strategies for expanded consulting on outpatient services lines beyond surgery, says Joan Dentler, president and founder of ASC Strategies and Outpatient Strategies.

“Our firm has always focused on helping hospitals and health systems understand how to compete in the freestanding surgery world. They engaged us to help them open HOPDs or ambulatory surgery centers and often asked us to stay on to support other outpatient service lines,” she says. “Forming Outpatient Strategies seemed like a natural fit for our short-term, non-equity, consulting services. We have aligned with some of the best and brightest minds who know freestanding healthcare and now we are able to bring multidisciplinary expertise to our hospital clients who acknowledge they need someone from the freestanding world on their team to ensure creditability.”

Ms. Dentler says the new Outpatient Strategies division is in the midst of assisting NYU Langone Medical Center open its Center for Musculoskeletal Care which will include an outpatient surgery center ASC Strategies helped the organization open in 2008.

The Center for Musculoskeletal Care houses 85,000 square feet of office space for orthopedics, rheumatology, rehab medicine and pain management, PT/OT, musculoskeletal infusion and imaging. “Our job on both NYULMC engagements was to make sure these hospital-based facilities don’t operate like a hospital department,” Ms. Dentler says.

“We didn’t want to engage a traditional hospital consultant who was still learning how outpatient services should be delivered,” says Gail Chorney, MD, director of the Center for Musculoskeletal Care. “We wanted someone with a track record in the outpatient space that would bring a different and very valuable perspective to our project.”
