Roughly 80 employees will be laid off as a result. Stewart-Webster had served the area for more than 60 years, according to the report.
Stewart-Webster President Randy Stigleman told WRBL the hospital was shutting down due to high unemployment, rising charity care costs and a high mix of Medicare and Medicaid patients. However, the hospital could reopen if a new owner is able to find new sources of revenue.
