The shadow, also known as a technical adviser, accompanies Mr. Bezos to all of his meetings for a year or two to learn all aspects of the business. Wei Gao, who most recently served as a vice president of forecasting during her 13-year career at Amazon, is Mr. Bezos’ newest shadow.

Ms. Gao, whose LinkedIn profile says she has held the “VP, Technical Advisor to CEO” position since July, replaces Jeffrey Helbling, who was named a technical adviser in early 2017. Ms. Gao is the second female employee to shadow Mr. Bezos.

Mr. Bezos’ shadows tend to go on to lead high-profile teams at Amazon.

Maria Renz, who left the technical adviser position in 2017, is now vice president of delivery experience, according to CNBC. Other past shadows include Andy Jassy, now CEO of Amazon Web Services, and Greg Hart, now vice president of Prime Video.
