The head of Regional Medical Center in Anniston, Ala., has confirmed the hospital is under federal investigation for possible HIPAA violations, according to an Anniston Star report.
David McCormack, CEO, said the Office of Civil Rights is investigating an anonymous complaint filed in March that alleged the hospital violated HIPAA. The complaint referred to an incident that occurred in Feb. 2010 in which an RMC physician faxed the names of students involved in a school bus accident to a local law firm.
RMC conducted an internal investigation before its board reprimanded the physician in June 2010 and required him to attend a course on the hospital’s privacy policy procedures.
“They’re still looking into it,” Mr. McCormack said in the report, referring to the OCR. “I don’t know why they are taking so long. We gave them everything we had.”
