Altamonte Springs, Fla.-based AdventHealth president and CEO David Banks has flagged mission as what helps great organizations stay great.
In an Oct. 29 LinkedIn post, Mr. Banks flagged the book Incorruptible by Eric Ries, as reinforcing a conviction that the health system has always held: mission keeps you grounded in identity and purpose.
“But mission isn’t lived out through words on a wall,” Mr. Banks said in the post. “As [Mr. Ries] explains, it has to be embedded within the fabric of an organization’s DNA and practices.”
He outlined three questions that AdventHealth uses to test whether this is happening:
“Do we keep the promises that make our mission real?” Mr. Banks said for AdventHealth, the answer to the question is in how people experience the system’s mission through compassion and care.
“Does our mission shape how we work?” Mr. Banks said mission-driven culture, structures and processes should guide how systems support their teams, deliver care and make decisions, particularly the hard ones.
“Do we give it the attention it requires every day?” Mr. Banks said without daily reflection and application, an organization “can gradually become something it never intended to be.”
