AdventHealth CEO on approaching big decisions

Making hard choices is part of what it takes to be a CEO, but Terry Shaw, president and CEO of Altamonte Springs, Fla.-based AdventHealth, urged people in a Sept. 10 LinkedIn post to relieve themselves of the “perfect decision” myth.

“Decisions often play out more like a game of poker,” he said. “Moves must be made based on limited, and often imperfect, information. The outcome isn’t revealed until the last card is turned over.”

Mr. Shaw also encouraged people to not put all of their expectations and hopes into a single potential outcome and to remain open to other possibilities.

“If things turn out differently than planned, be willing to pivot and learn from the process,” he said.

AdventHealth comprises 51 hospital campuses and hundreds of healthcare sites across nine states. It has more than 92,000 employees, according to its website.

At Becker's 4th Annual CEO + CFO Roundtable, taking place November 2–5 in Chicago, more than 1,500 hospital and health system executives tackle decisions that determine whether organizations thrive or merely survive: protecting margins under cost pressure, choosing where to grow, renegotiating payer relationships, stabilizing the workforce and proving real ROI on technology. This is where leaders work through them together, face-to-face. Apply for complimentary registration now.
