ABC's 'Nightline' previews documentary on ex-Theranos CEO Jan. 23

ABC News' "Nightline" will preview a documentary on Elizabeth Holmes, founder and former CEO of controversial blood-testing startup Theranos, Jan. 23.

Ms. Holmes, once credited as the youngest self-made female billionaire, launched Theranos in 2003 with a promise to revolutionize blood testing. At its height, the company — which claimed to invent a device that offered quick diagnostic results using only a single drop of blood — was valued at $9 billion.

But a 2015 exposé in The Wall Street Journal — which alleged Theranos' devices were flawed and inaccurate — triggered a series of federal investigations into the startup, and in early 2018 the company and Ms. Holmes were charged with fraud. In September, the company shut down.

The documentary, titled The Dropout, follows a three-year investigation by ABC News Chief Business, Technology and Economics correspondent Rebecca Jarvis into the life of Ms. Holmes, a Stanford (Calif.) University dropout turned CEO.

ABC Radio will release a six-episode podcast of the same name Jan. 23. Episodes of the podcast will be made available each Wednesday on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, TuneIn, Spotify, Stitcher and the ABC News app.
