Study Reveals Most Satisfied, Least Satisfied Hospital Employees

Hospital senior management reported the highest overall job satisfaction of all hospital employees, while critical intensive care workers reported the lowest overall satisfaction, according to a study conducted by HR Solutions.

The study identified hospital employees who exhibit the highest and lowest overall job satisfaction. Senior management employees differed from critical intensive care workers by almost 26 percentage points.

The following departments represent the highest overall job satisfaction, based on overall job satisfaction percent favorable norm:

• Senior management: 87 percent
• Hospice: 84 percent
• Human resources: 81 percent
• Clinical professional (physical therapist, social worker, etc.): 78 percent
• Security: 77 percent

The following departments represent the lowest overall job satisfaction, based on overall job satisfaction percent favorable norm:

• Medical-surgical: 67 percent
• Food and nutrition: 65 percent
• Neonatal intensive care unit: 65 percent
• Medical-surgical and critical care ED: 64 percent
• Critical intensive care: 62 percent

The study concluded that the highest-scoring departments included employees who typically perform administrative function as well as staff who have direct contact with patients. The lowest-scoring departments include employees who work long hours, perform risky procedures and spend the majority of their workday caring for patients in critical condition.
