The finding is one of many from the American Hospital Association’s latest survey, “Building a Leadership Team for the Health Care Organization of the Future.”

Here is how executives answered the question, “What are the key strategic priorities for your organization over the next three years?”

1. Improving efficiency through productivity and financial management — 56 percent
2. Joining and growing integrated provider networks and care systems (either through formalized structures or virtual/affiliated networks) — 46 percent
3. Aligning with other institutions along the continuum of care — 45 percent
4. Adopting evidence-based practices to improve quality and patient safety — 39 percent
5. Integrating information systems — 32 percent
6. Establishing partnerships with payers — 22 percent
7. Strengthening finances to facilitate reinvestment and innovation — 20 percent
8. Improving employee and physician training, engagement and leadership skills — 15 percent

Findings are based on responses to an online survey of more than 1,100 executives, 95 percent of whom were CEOs and 5 percent of whom were strategy executives with their organizations. The majority of respondents worked with health systems or community hospitals.
