Texas’ Christus Santa Rosa to Close City Centre Hospital, Cut 400 Employees
Christus Santa Rosa Health System in San Antonio, Texas, is planning to permanently close its City Centre hospital, also located in San Antonio, which will eliminate 400 jobs. Christus Santa Rosa Hospital-City Centre is slated to close August 13 as part of the system’s planned $135 million plan to transform that facility into a new children’s hospital.
Novant Health to Trim 289 Jobs
Novant Health, based in Winston-Salem, N.C., announced plans to cut 289 positions with 82 of those coming from management. About 22 percent of the cuts will affect the 13-hospital system’s clinical staff, including nurses and others involved in care delivery. Novant has roughly 25,000 employees, not including the planned cuts.
Salem Hospital in Oregon May Cut Additional 150 Jobs
In February, Salem (Ore.) Hospital laid off 30 full- and part-time employees in a $30 million spending cut initiative. More recently, the hospital may eliminate an additional 150 full-time-equivalent positions over the next two to four months. CEO Norm Gruber informed hospital employees of the layoff plans, citing low patient volumes as a major driver.
Sunrise Hospital in Nevada Plans to Cut 144 Jobs
Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in Winchester, Nev., plans to eliminate 144 jobs as a result of the poor economy. Hospital executives have offered voluntary severance packages to workers, giving them until May 30 to decide whether they will accept the offer.
MaineGeneral Medical Center to Cut 47 Jobs
MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta, Maine, is cutting 47 positions as it tries to meet a $400 million operating budget for the next fiscal year. Fifteen jobs will be eliminated, and 32 vacant positions will not be filled.
Nurses Protest Job Cuts at Boston Medical Center
Unionized nurses at Boston Medical Center are protesting a new round of layoffs at the teaching hospital, this time involving the elimination of 40 positions. The cuts will affect 31 full-time equivalent positions at the hospital’s acute-injury rehabilitation unit, which is slated to close July 1, and nine other jobs resulting from a reduction in patient beds.
LSU Hospitals May Shutter Units, Curb Services Due to Budget Cuts
Louisiana State University Health, based in Baton Rouge, may have to eliminate certain surgical programs, lay off employees, reduce beds and curb emergency department services at seven hospitals due to proposed state budget cuts.
